Policy for Admission of Non-Resident Students
May 5, 2009
Hello all,
After I attended the SC meeting on April 30th as well this morning’s PTA meeting, I have sought and have attached here the current (2003) policy for Admission of Non-Resident Students as well as the draft for revision presented at the April 30th SC meeting. The School Committee has taken up revision of this policy for two reasons 1. In an effort to align it with the new class size policy and 2. There was a large number of requests (12) to enroll non-resident children for the 09/10 school year. At the April 30th meeting the SC did vote to approve enrollment of all 12 students, but have deferred a vote on the policy change to a future SC date (TBD).
There are major changes being presented that parents, teachers and other town employees may want to understand or may want to know more about before the School Committee votes.
Some of the changes alter the following:
1. how and when and by whom the space availability in a particular grade is determined 2. under current policy children currently admitted and enrolled are allowed to stay in the system as long as the parent is a town employee. Under the new draft policy, each year eligibility for the children of town employees will be evaluated
Jennifer Glass on the SC has proposed a revision to the draft attached here to “grandfather” all current students such that they would not be subject to annual evaluation under the proposed new draft criteria. This revision language has not yet been put into the document.
If you are interested in this topic, I encourage you to look at both documents and communicate to the School Committee your thoughts.
